Speed vs Price: Why the Cheapest Finance Can Cost Your Business the Most

Time to read 3 mins

Summary

For UK SMEs, the cheapest finance isn’t always the best value: slow approvals, conditional offers and long waits can cost far more than a lower interest rate ever saves. Here we look at the hidden cost of waiting for bank finance, and why speed and certainty deserve a place alongside price when you decide how to fund your business. When business owners and finance leaders compare funding options, the headline interest rate usually gets the most attention. It’s easy to see why – it’s the number on the offer letter, and the simplest one to compare. But for most small and medium-sized UK businesses, the real question isn’t just how much finance costs. It’s when the money arrives. A lower rate that takes months to come through can quietly erode value, momentum and options in ways that never show up on a loan agreement.

Slow funding can cost you the opportunity

ACCA guidance suggests that secured or more complex bank lending typically takes two to three months to complete, particularly where new security, covenants or credit committee approval are involved. Yet many of the opportunities SMEs need funding for move much faster than that.

A retailer may need to buy stock ahead of a peak season. A manufacturer may be offered a discount for ordering materials in bulk. A professional services firm may win a contract that requires new hires before the first invoice is paid. And for larger SMEs, an acquisition can collapse if funding isn’t confirmed within the agreed exclusivity period.

In each case, the window is measured in days or weeks, not months. Momentum is fragile – and once it’s lost, it can be expensive, and sometimes impossible, to rebuild.

Timing shapes the value of your business

Whether you plan to sell one day or simply want to build a more valuable company, your business’s value depends on future earnings, growth prospects and a track record of delivering on plans. This adds to the importance of seizing growth opportunities.

A delayed investment pushes revenue into a later period and holds back profits in the meantime. For a smaller business, that might mean a slower year. For a medium-sized firm preparing for investment or a sale, a single missed growth cycle can affect both the timing and the price of an exit.

"Approved in principle" isn't the same as funded

Many businesses plan around a facility that has been approved in principle, only to see it delayed or derailed by further conditions. These can include requests for updated management accounts or audited figures, asset revaluations, revised covenants, or a second trip to the credit committee if market conditions change.

British Business Bank data shows that many businesses either receive less finance than they asked for or withdraw their applications altogether, often because of uncertainty, conditions or timing.

This creates real planning risk. Hiring, stock orders and investment decisions get made around money that may never fully materialise – and the time spent chasing approvals that eventually fail, or arrive too late, can’t be recovered.

The hidden cost of waiting

The costs of waiting for funding are easy to overlook because they don’t appear on any statement. The opportunity cost of a missed contract or lost supplier discount can outweigh the interest saved many times over. Management time is pulled into repeated lender meetings and paperwork instead of running the business. And the longer a decision takes, the greater the risk that customers, suppliers or markets move on.

In uncertain conditions, certainty and speed often matter more than headline pricing. That’s one reason the UK lending market has broadened, with challenger and specialist banks now accounting for around 60% of gross SME lending, reflecting demand for faster, more flexible capital.

This isn’t about weaker businesses looking elsewhere. It reflects the need to match funding to real business timelines.

Rethinking how you compare finance

When weighing up funding options, consider the rate, then ask three further questions. Can the money be in place when you actually need it? Is the approval genuinely deliverable, or does it depend on conditions that could change? And does the lender understand your business and the time pressures you’re working to?

Non-bank lenders increasingly fill timing gaps rather than quality gaps, complementing traditional finance rather than replacing it. For many SMEs, the right answer is a mix: bank lending for long-term, planned needs, and faster, more flexible funding for the opportunities that won’t wait.
